The United States of America, or the US for short, is one of the largest countries in the world both in terms of population and size.
50 states make up this country, but which state is your favorite? If you like to travel, it’s important to know what each state has to offer—and if you like watching sports, you need to know where they all are too! After all, how can you cheer on your team if you don’t know where they’re from?
Alabama
The state of Alabama is located in the southeastern region of the United States. The state is bordered by Tennessee to the north, Georgia to the east, and Mississippi to the west. Alabama shares a border with Florida to the south. The capital city of Alabama is Montgomery.
The largest city in Alabama is Birmingham. Other major cities include Mobile, Huntsville, Tuscaloosa, and Auburn. Alabama has a humid subtropical climate that is characterized by hot summers and mild winters.
Alaska

Arizona
The Grand Canyon State, home to the Grand Canyon, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States.
The state is also home to the Navajo Nation, the largest Native American reservation in the country. The capital of Arizona is Phoenix, and the state’s population is just over 7 million.
Arkansas
The state of Arkansas is located in the southern region of the United States. The state’s name is derived from the French word for downriver people, referring to the Quapaw Indians who settled in the area.
Arkansas is known for its hot springs, which are a popular tourist destination. The state’s capital is Little Rock, and its largest city is Fort Smith.
California
The Golden State, home to Hollywood and Disneyland, is known for its sunny weather and beaches. The state’s economy is the largest in the United States, with over $3 trillion gross domestic product. California is also the most populous state in the country, with over 39 million residents.
The state’s diverse climate and geography make it a great place to live, work, and play. From San Diego on the Mexican border to Berkeley and Oakland near San Francisco Bay, to Los Angeles near the Pacific Ocean – there are plenty of things to do here. California has some of the best public schools in the nation and some of the best universities such as Stanford University in Palo Alto.
Colorado
The state of Colorado is located in the Rocky Mountain region of the United States. Wyoming borders it to the north, Nebraska to the northeast, Kansas to the east, Oklahoma to the southeast, New Mexico to the south, Utah to the west, and Arizona to the southwest.
The state was admitted to the Union on August 1, 1876. The capital and most populous city is Denver.
Connecticut
The fifth smallest state in the US, Connecticut is located in the New England region of the northeastern US. Rhode Island borders it to the east, Massachusetts to the north, and New York to the west. The Long Island Sound lies to the south of Connecticut, which makes up part of its coastline. Hartford is Connecticut’s capital city, and other major cities include Stamford, Bridgeport, and New Haven.
Delaware
The first state in the United States of America, Delaware is located on the Atlantic Coast in the Mid-Atlantic region.
The state is known for its beaches, as well as its history and culture. The state’s capital city is Dover, and its largest city is Wilmington. It was originally part of Pennsylvania but was transferred to New York before it became a separate colony.
It was admitted to the Union on December 7, 1787 and is the second smallest state in terms of population with about 1 million people living there.
Florida
The Sunshine State, home to over 20 million people, is best known for its sandy beaches, clear blue waters, and humid subtropical climate.
The capital city is Tallahassee, and the largest city is Jacksonville. Other notable cities include Miami, Tampa, and Orlando.
Florida is a popular tourist destination for both domestic and international travelers. According to Conde Nast Traveler, Florida’s theme parks are some of the most visited in the world. Popular sites include Walt Disney World Resort, Universal Orlando Resort, SeaWorld Orlando & Aquatica, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay and Discovery Cove.
Georgia
The state of Georgia is located in the southeastern United States. Georgia was the fourth state to ratify the United States Constitution on January 2, 1788. Georgia is the 24th largest and 8th most populous of the 50 United States.
The state’s 2019 estimated population was 10,617,423, an increase of about 1.1 million people since 2010. Atlanta is its capital and largest city, with a population of 4.3 million.
It is the cultural and economic center of the Atlanta metropolitan area, home to 5.6 million people, the ninth-largest metro area in the nation, and one of two international airline hubs for Delta Air Lines.
The Georgia World Congress Center houses five convention centers with over 1.8 million square feet (170,000 m2) of space; it ranks among the world’s top ten convention centers.
Hawaii
The Aloha State is the most recent state to join the Union on August 21st, 1959. The state is made up of a chain of volcanic islands in the central Pacific Ocean and is known for its tropical climate, beautiful beaches, and active volcanoes. The island of Hawaii, the largest in the state, is home to the majority of the population as well as the state capital, Honolulu. Fun fact: The world’s tallest mountain, Mauna Kea, is found in Hawaii.
Idaho
The state of Idaho is located in the northwestern region of the United States. It is bordered by the states of Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, and Utah. Idaho is home to some of the most beautiful scenery in the country, including mountains, forests, and rivers.
The state’s capital is Boise, and its largest city is Nampa. Idaho’s population is just over 1.7 million people. Famous Idahoans include actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus, singer/songwriter Jewel, former President George H.W. Bush, and musicians Alice Cooper and Tyler Ward.
Illinois
The 21st state admitted to the Union, Illinois, is known as the Land of Lincoln because it is the state where Abraham Lincoln spent most of his life. It is also home to the city of Chicago, one of the largest and most populous cities in the United States.
With a population of over 12 million people, Illinois is a diverse and vibrant state with a lot to offer. From its bustling metropolises to its scenic rural areas, Illinois is a great place to live and visit.
Indiana
The nineteenth state admitted to the Union, Indiana became a state on December 11, 1816. The capital of Indiana is Indianapolis. The name Indiana means land of the Indians, and it is the thirty-seventh largest state in the United States.
With a population of more than 6 million people, Indiana is known for its Hoosier hospitality and Midwestern values.
The state motto is Crossroads of America. It is bordered by Ohio, Kentucky, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Canada. Indiana has a humid continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. Iowa
The Hawkeye State is located in the Midwestern region of the US. The capital city is Des Moines, and the largest city is Cedar Rapids.
The state is bordered by Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Some popular tourist attractions include the Amana Colonies, the Field of Dreams movie site, and the Iowa State Fair.
Kansas
The Sunflower State is located in the Midwestern region of the US. The capital city is Topeka and the largest city is Wichita. The state is named after the Kansas River, which flows through it. The state has a population of over 2.9 million people.
It became the 34th state on January 29th, 1861, and its motto is Ad Astra per Aspera meaning To the stars through difficulties.
It was one of six states admitted to the Union during the Civil War era. There are five universities with branches that are located in Kansas: Washburn University, Fort Hays State University, Pittsburg State University, Emporia State University and Haskell Indian Nations University.
Kentucky
The Bluegrass State is home to many beautiful horse farms and the Louisville Cardinals. The state capital is Frankfort, and the largest city is Louisville. Some of Kentucky’s most famous residents include Muhammad Ali, Hunter S.
Thompson, and Jennifer Lawrence. Recently, this popular trail has been expanded so visitors can explore bourbon-related distilleries and culinary offerings from some of Kentucky’s top chefs.

Louisiana
The state of Louisiana is located in the southern region of the United States. It is bordered by the states of Arkansas, Mississippi, and Texas.
The capital city of Louisiana is Baton Rouge and its largest city is New Orleans. The state’s nickname is The Pelican State. Its official motto is Union, Justice, Confidence. Its current governor is John Bel Edwards.
Maryland
The Old Line State, Maryland is home to 6.045 million people as of 2019. The state’s capital is Annapolis and its largest city is Baltimore. Maryland was admitted into the Union on April 28, 1788, as the seventh state. The state’s official nickname is The Old Line State. Maryland comes from the English queen Henrietta Maria, who was the wife of King Charles I.
Massachusetts
The first state on our list is Massachusetts. Founded in 1620, it was the site of the first successful colony in New England and would go on to play a pivotal role in the American Revolution. Today, Massachusetts is known for its rich history, the abundance of colleges and universities, and vibrant economy. Worcester has been named as one of the best places to live in the country, while Boston ranks among one of the best places for business. With so much history and plenty of opportunities, there’s no wonder that this state is thriving!
Michigan
The first state in the Midwest region of the United States is Michigan. The state is bordered by four of the five Great Lakes. Lake Superior, Huron, Michigan, and Erie touch the state’s borders. The name Michigan is derived from the Ojibwe word mishigami, meaning large water or large lake. The capital city is Lansing and the largest city is Detroit. Grand Rapids is the second-largest city in the state. Most of Michigan is covered with forests, lakes, rivers, and streams that provide recreation opportunities for tourists. Nearby cities include Chicago, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis and Columbus.
Minnesota
The North Star State is home to 10,000 lakes, the Mississippi River, and the Mall of America. The state’s name comes from the Dakota Sioux word for clear blue water.
Hokey Pokey and Hotdish are two popular Minnesota foods. The state bird is the common loon.
Mississippi
The Magnolia State is the 20th state in the USA. It was admitted to the Union on December 10, 1817. The state capital is Jackson and the largest city is Gulfport.
The population is approximately 2,978,400. The state flower is the magnolia.
Missouri
The missouri State is the 18th state of the United States of America. It was admitted to the Union on August 10, 1821.
The state’s capital is Jefferson City, and its largest city is Kansas City. Missouri is named after the Missouri River, which was named after the native Missouria tribe.
The state has a variety of nicknames, including the Cave State, the Ozark State, and the Mother of the West.

Montana
The state of Montana is located in the Western region of the United States. It was admitted to the Union on November 8, 1889, as the 41st state.
The state’s capital is Helena and its largest city is Billings. Big Sky Country, Montana is known for its wide open spaces and beautiful scenery.
To this day, a high percentage of land remains unspoiled by human development. Montana is also home to both the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, a well-known National Park Service site that commemorates their historic expedition through the Louisiana Purchase Territory (including today’s states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas), and Glacier National Park with its many glaciers.
Nebraska

Nevada
The state of Nevada is located in the western region of the United States.
Oregon borders it to the northwest, Idaho to the northeast, California to the west, Arizona to the southeast, and Utah to the east. The capital of Nevada is Carson City, and its largest city is Las Vegas.
New Hampshire

New Jersey
The state of New Jersey is located in the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. It is bordered by New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.
The state has a population of over 8 million people. The capital city is Trenton and the largest city is Newark. There are 22 counties in New Jersey. The two major industries are manufacturing and tourism.
Rhode Island
The smallest state in the US, Rhode Island, is located in New England and was one of the original thirteen colonies.
The state is known for its beaches, as well as its rich colonial history. Providence, the state capital, is home to many colleges and universities.
Rhode Island is a great place to visit if you’re looking for a mix of historical and modern attractions. You can explore 19th-century mansions like historic Belcourt Castle or tour the Roger Williams National Memorial which showcases the life of this founding father of Rhode Island. You can also head over to Newport County, where you’ll find stunning mansions like Chateau-sur-Mer that date back to the early 1900s.

North Dakota

Pennsylvania is the 33rd-largest state by area.
The state has 51 miles (82 km) of coastline along Lake Erie and 57 miles (92 km) of shoreline along the Delaware Estuary. Important cities include Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Allentown, Erie, Reading. The economic and social center of the Commonwealth is in Harrisburg.
South Carolina
The Palmetto State is located in the southeastern US, bordered by North Carolina to the north and Georgia to the south.
The state’s name comes from the Latin word for palm tree, and its capital is Columbia. South Carolina is known for its beaches, golf courses, and historic sites. Charleston is a major tourist destination, with many antebellum homes and military fortifications. Coastal communities have been managed under the SC Beach Management Plan since 1971.

South Dakota
The Mount Rushmore State, South Dakota is home to some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. From the Badlands to the Black Hills, there is something for everyone in South Dakota. The state is also home to several major universities, including the University of South Dakota and South Dakota State University.
Tennessee
The Volunteer State, Tennessee is located in the southeastern part of the US. Tennessee is bordered by eight states – Kentucky and Virginia to the north, North Carolina to the east, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi to the south, and Arkansas and Missouri to the west.

Vermont
The Green Mountain State, Vermont, is located in the New England region of the northeastern United States. With a population of just over626,000, it is the second least populous state in the country after Wyoming.
The state capital is Montpelier, and its largest city is Burlington.
Virginia
The state of Virginia is located in the southeastern United States. It is bordered by the states of Maryland and West Virginia to the north, North Carolina to the south, and Tennessee to the southwest.
The state capital is Richmond, and the largest city is Virginia Beach. The state was named for Queen Elizabeth I of England, also known as the Virgin Queen.
Washington
The state of Washington is located in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. The state is bordered by Oregon to the south, Idaho to the east, and British Columbia, Canada to the north. Washington is the 18th largest state in terms of land area, and has a population of over 7 million people. The state’s capital is Olympia, and its largest city is Seattle.
West Virginia
The state of West Virginia is located in the Appalachian region of the Southern United States. The state is bordered by Virginia to the southeast, Kentucky to the southwest, Ohio to the northwest, and Pennsylvania and Maryland to the northeast.
The capital and largest city is Charleston. West Virginia became a state following the Wheeling Conventions of 1861.
Wisconsin
The state of Wisconsin is located in the north-central United States, in the Midwest region. Lake Michigan borders it to the east, Illinois to the south, Iowa to the southwest, Minnesota to the west, and Michigan to the northwest.
As of 2019, the population of Wisconsin was 5.8 million. The capital city is Madison and the largest city is Milwaukee.
Wyoming
Though it’s the 10th largest state in the US by area, Wyoming is the least populous state in the nation. It’s nickname is The Equality State because it was the first state to grant women voting rights back in 1869.
Cheyenne is the capital and though it’s one of the smallest capitals in the US, it’s also one of the most livable. The landscape of Wyoming is very diverse, from its forests and mountains to its desert plains.
